STARTUP 101: 5 CRUCIAL THOUGHTS WHEN STARTING A BUSINESS

It seems as if everyone wants to be an entrepreneur.  Whether it’s because your job sucks, it’s just time to move on, you’re sick of working for “the man” or you just need additional income – the word entrepreneur is the “new black”.

I always tell people not quit their day job for the first year of starting a business.  Heck, if you can hold on to your job for 2 years continue to bask in getting a check every two weeks and percentage of your healthcare paid for by your employer.  These are two things that you’ll surely miss when you go out on your own.  TRUST ME.

Making that leap to being your own boss is one that should never be taken lightly.  Here are a few CRUCIAL thoughts twhenstarting a business.  Lessons that I have learned over the years and have to reiterate to myself with each and every venture.

1.  BE OBSESSED WITH WINNING.  Don’t make that leap unless you’re obsessed about it and can articulate a clear and competitive edge over your competition.  What can you do that’s different from the competition?  Running a business is extremely difficult.  If you’re not obsessed with winning, and can’t articulate your blueprint for success – don’t give up your day job.  You’ve got to have that edge.  Even 5 years in with NOLA Ice I will wake up at 5am to make sure we have the best spot at a festival.  I’ll be up all night making sure everything is just right for the next morning.  In every situation there’s a winner and a loser.  No one remembers that you came in second, or were just nominated.  They remember the ones who can register that “W”.

2.  STAY FOCUSED.  It’s so easy to want to move quickly, expand into different markets, but you have to make sure everything is just right before making that leap.  Stay focused on your core product or service before making those next steps.  Don’t expand into a new market, a new location, or add additional products until your CORE product, the thing that made you want to do what you do, is perfect.

3.  DON’T BE AFRAID TO FAIL.  Failure used to be one of my biggest fears but it happened and I learned from it and grew.  Never be afraid to fail.  Your true failure is from not learning why it happened and refusing to pick yourself up and take the next definitive steps to get back on track.

4.  HIRE WELL. I personally say avoid hiring family and friends unless these individuals are competent because once the shit hits the fan they will no longer be your family and/or friend.  Hiring well is crucial to the overall success of your company.  Customer service is huge in any industry.  Having competent, outstanding individuals representing not only your business but you is what will allow you to continue to develop, to continue to grow.

5.  LISTEN.  I can’t stress this enough.  Listening is crucial to the growth of your business.  Some of my best ideas come from my employees and customers.  Listen to their wants, their needs, and try to incorporate that into your corporate structure.  Never be “too good” or “too smart” to at least listen to the advice or suggestions of others.  If you are not prepared to close your mouth and open your eyes and ears then this industry may not be the one for you.

What else would you add to the list?

Make Your Mess Your Message

Make your mess your message…

These words were spoken by Robin Roberts as she received the Arthur Ashe Courage Awards at this years ESPYS.  Quietly, Roberts is a personal hero of mine, who has overcome battles with breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), spoke with the eloquence and humility she’s shown since joining the staff of ESPN’s Sportscenter in 1990.  Her journey is one for all of us to study and her courage and determination is something we should all consider emulating.

Make your mess your message…

Last month I discovered that my Mom actually reads my blog.  Yes, this shocked me. Honestly I never assumed she’d ever click the link. She proceeded to tell me it was good, that she enjoyed my writing, but didn’t understand why so many of my blogs are so personal. I told her that I sometimes use this as a platform of my own self-therapy. To reiterate what I have learned as a person and a small business owner – to not only help others but myself. It’s my personal online therapy but if it helps someone else out…well then I’m happy.

Make your mess your message…

As an adult, as a professional, but especially as a small business owner we have the pressure of trying to appear that we have it all together. Show no worries, show no fear, and keep any and all struggles to ourselves. But this can also derail your path towards success.  Your story – your compelling story – is what drives you down that road to success in a Range instead of a Tercel.

Lets take Oprah Winfery for example.  Oprah was someone who was not supposed to “make it” based off her looks alone. African American female, overweight, not the most gorgeous Halle Berry-esque woman (and don’t tell me I’m lying because we all remember what Oprah looked like before she became OPRAH).  But, because she exposed herself, pulled back that veil, and allowed the world to see her everything – the world responded and she is where she is today.  She exposed her vulnerability and a nation of households and housewives took her in each and every afternoon.  And look at where she is now!

Make your mess your message…

I’ve said it time and time again in private, amongst friends and family, that this has been a tough year both personally and professionally. If you read the post before this one you’ll get a hint into my mind in 2013.  But I’ve also allowed my friends and family into my personal even more – exposing myself for them to know what is really going on.  This is something I generally do not do in that I am that person who always wants everyone to assume that everything is fine and to not worry about me.  Instead I’ve learned that my actions do the exact opposite and to stop responding to questions regarding how I’m doing with “I’m cool. I’m always cool”.

Make your mess your message…

It may sound strange, weird or even crazy but the things you try to keep quiet about are the things that are critical to your success as an entrepreneur or a professional as a whole.  Your compelling story is a key to your success.  People love the “started from the bottom now I’m here” type stories (shout out to Wheelchair Jimmy).  Hell, people love a good struggle – though they don’t think you’re struggling – and how you fought hard, kicked ass and made it to where you are now.

Make your mess you message…

So what should you do now? Write a blog. Share your story in 500 characters or less. Share your journey. But write it out so that when you are talking to clients, or when someone comes across your site or blog they can learn more about who you are and become even more compelled to hire you because they see you as not only a professional but also as a human being – someone they can relate to and someone they don’t mind doing business with.

Thoughts?

THE ART OF THE ELEVATOR PITCH

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to judge a 30-second Elevator Pitch contest at a local college.  To say that it was not the best is irrelevant.  To say that the students were ill prepared is correct.  Don’t get me wrong, their ideas were great.  But their presentations, for college students, was lacking.

Afterwards I was able to sit down with them and discuss the importance of always being prepared for anything an investor, VC, professor, judge or anyone that may be interested in their business is asking.

An Elevator Pitch is s a short summary used to quickly and simply define a product, service, or organization and its value proposition.  The name “elevator pitch” reflects the idea that it should be possible to deliver the summary in the time span of an elevator ride, or approximately thirty seconds to two minutes.

This format is generally used by an entrepreneur pitching an idea to a venture capitalist or angel investor to receive funding. Venture capitalists often judge the quality of an idea by the quality of its elevator pitch and will ask entrepreneurs for their elevator pitches in order to quickly weed out bad ideas and weak teams. Elevator pitches are also used in many other situations. Personal uses include job interviewing, dating, and summarizing professional services.

All entrepreneurs must make their pitches unique to who they are and to what they are trying to sell.  Over time, I’ve learned it’s not what goes into the business pitch but also what you leave out of it.

Whether you’re pitching to friends, investors, angels or venture capitalists, the cardinal rules remain the same: BE BRIEF AND BE CLEAR.

You’ve got to have a clear, concise way to answer that question — and that’s your “elevator pitch.”

It takes quite a bit of thinking to decide which aspects of your business to mention. Even more frustrating, you have to decide which parts of your company to leave out. Often these can be the things you’re most excited about — a new technology, a great location, the fact you get to go to Europe on buying trips. But if they’re not central to the core of your business, then they don’t belong in an elevator pitch.

The biggest mistake most people make when answering the question “What do you do?” is that they take that question too literally and start describing exactly what they do. I remember one woman who sold advertising who described in detail what she did: came to the client’s office, picked up their ad copy, went to the printer, sent back proofs, and on and on.

Your elevator pitch must not only be short, it must be clear. Unless you’re in a highly technical field, your neighbor or grandmother should be able to understand your business well enough to be able to describe it to someone else. After all, you want Grandma out there marketing for you too, don’t you?

Your elevator pitch should touch — very briefly — on the products or services you sell, what market you serve, and your competitive advantage.

It’s often a good idea to use an analogy as part of your elevator pitch, especially if you’re in a new or difficult-to-grasp field. “We’re the Google for car buyers” is a good shorthand way to say that you’re trying to create a search engine for people wanting to purchase an automobile.

If you’re in an easy-to-understand business, your elevator pitch theoretically could be very short. But you still want it long enough to distinguish you from your competitors.

Bob Bly, who is a well known copywriter, provides an example and a 3-part formula for giving a GREAT elevator pitch:

3 Part Formula for a Successful Elevator Pitch

1. Ask a question – So for example if you do SEO you could say “Do you know how millions of people search google every day using keywords to find what they are looking for?”

2. Say what it is you do – “Well what I do is help business owners get their website ranked in the top position on google for keywords people would use to find their business online.”

3. List the main benefit you give – “This helps increase their revenue by bringing targeted leads directly to them.”

So go out and find a four-story building with an elevator, ride up and down and practice your “elevator pitch.” That way you’ll be completely prepared the next time some one asks you, “What do you do?”

Business Relationships 102: The Power of REAL Friendships

NOLA Ice, LLC.

Bill Cosby once said, “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future”. Well, let me just say, my friends are AWESOME and therefore my future will more than likely be the same.
SOOOO this summer I have started a new venture, NOLA Ice, LLC. What started off as a conversation between my best friend Brett, his wife Lydia, and I a few years ago; followed by a few emails between my brother Todd and I; finally took shape this past weekend, as “NOLA Ice: The Original New Orleans SNO-Ball” stand has now taken over Birmingham, Alabama.

The concept is simple. I am constantly trying to bring a little “taste” of my home town to the city that helped raise me. If you’re from New Orleans, or have just been in the summer months, two things come to mind (besides heat and humidity): Daiquirs and SnoBalls.

Because of various alcohol regulations in Alabama, a daiquri shop would be pointless. So I decided to open my own snoball stand and take it on the road. But honestly, nothing could have been accomplished without the help of my friends.

From the design of the logo (trademark pending by the way) – Ayo, to the design of the marketing materials – Mr Wells. To my dear friend from high school, Erin Dunavant, taking over the interior design of the trailer; and to my brother from another – Mark Nelson – getting the window and glass work completed.

Then there was my brother Gusty utilizing his huge contacts database to get the exterior design accomplished. Lets not forget the editing of the website content – J Reid (who also created the most popular specialty mix “The Ross Boss”). Colors (that pay homage to my beloved New Orleans Saints) – A. Miller. Menu development – too many people to name. Nothing, NOTHING, could have been accomplished without these great people in my life.

I remember sitting in a campaign meeting when my best friend, and little brother, was first running for State Rep in Louisiana a few years ago. One thing that struck me was the reaction of a friend when a potential campaign manager said he had a database of contacts and for 10k could bring them all to the table for the campaign. In response, the statement “Everyone throw your blackberry in the middle of the table. $10 says we have each of those contacts plus more” was made. By the way, we did and yes, he won. Point of this story? With a great circle, not only can you go far in life – you can accomplish pretty much anything both professionally and personally.

Gusty Gulas, the best Realtor in AlabamaFriendships are powerful. Especially real ones. When you were younger these individuals were your friends, the people you went to school with, played sports with, kicked it with on some weekends. What became after you walked across that stage and received that diploma is the true test, for now you no longer see those individuals each and every day, but instead must work hard to nurture and cultivate these relationships. It’s crazy to see what my friends have become – are becoming. I couldn’t be prouder to have these individuals in my life. Hopefully one day I can return all the many favors I constantly ask of them and miracles I ask for them to perform. And the constant encouragement and support. Yes, my circle is AWESOME.

Starting this business was one of the items on “The List: 30 Before 30”. As I stated in a previous post, my reasons for even compiling this list was so I could learn something about myself and accomplish a few major goals. With this project I learned the true power of relationships – both in business and in my personal life. Moreover, I learned that I could also take an idea from just that, an idea, and bring it to life. In many ways I was testing myself for something bigger and better. But with this company, although small in nature, I was able to implement all that I’d learned over the past 3 years owning Quiznos and truly test my knowledge. Right now, I’m happy – but ask me how I feel towards the end of August.

What will be the end result? I have an idea and a goal that I am not quite ready to share. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. But while you’re doing that – follow us on Twitter: @NOLAIceBham and “Like” us on Facebook – NOLA Ice, LLC.

FOCUS ON THE WORK, NOT THE RESULTS

When spending a great amount of time working on anything, it’s hard to not stay focused on the task at hand. Sometimes our mind tends to wonder on what will be the results of this hard work – the fruits of our labor. For me focusing is a HUGE problem. After a while my mind tends start imagining what would come of all the many hours that I have placed into a particular project. But I have learned when I stop myself from doing that, and focus on the task at hand – I tend to have better results.

By placing importance on hours and physical presence over action and results leads to a culture of inefficiency (and anxiety). The pressure of being required to sit at your desk until a certain time creates a factory-like culture that ignores a few basic laws of idea generation and human nature: (1) When the brain is tired, it doesn’t work well, (2) Idea generation happens on its own terms, (3) When you feel forced to execute beyond your capacity, you begin to hate what you are doing.

Of course, there is no short-cut for the perspiration required to make ideas happen. But the time required to complete a project successfully must reveal itself rather than be dictated. If you care about your work, you will do what it takes to get it done right. As such, your performance should be measured by your ability to get work done on time and done well. Your decisions about when and how you completed the work should not matter.

The key is to remain focused on the task at hand and not what will come out of it. Here are a few ways to help you achieve this:

xercise Thought
Keep a mental picture of what you want to achieve at all times, this attracts it to be manifested with in your life. See yourself there and try to feel how you would if you were there already. The only thing that is keeping you from being there is you and only you, so allow yourself to be there in any way possible. We are all capable of achieving our goals, it’s just a matter of time. By seeing or acting as if you already achieved your goals, you’ll find new focus on why you are working towards your goals.

Break It Up
If you are like me and working completely alone to achieve these goals you have set for yourself, then I suggest breaking that work up into smaller pieces. It is best and easier to work as if you’re making a jigsaw puzzle, instead of making a 20 foot wall mural. This will help keep you motivated and focused due to the fact that you are continuously accomplishing small pieces of the goals.

Keep Them Away
Don’t listen to the nay-sayers, if someone thinks you’re a little nuts, or don’t have faith in what you can accomplish, then forget about them. These people are just a little upset that they don’t have the drive, as you do, to shoot for the stars. Don’t completely blame them either, it’s just that society has a way of conditioning people into staying in their safe and cozy comfort zones. If you let them affect you, your focus will dissipate, and we don’t want that.

New Found Territory
Stay out of your comfort zone, being successful is all about taking risks and doing what is commonly not done in our society – taking the path less traveled. If you stay in your comfort zone, you’ll be relaxed and that may lead you to forgetting about your goals – floating in limbo while you wait for something to happen is never good. Avoid your comfort zone, if you’re kind of uncomfortable it may mean that you are climbing higher into new and unchartered territory you have never been in, and that is exactly where you want to be.

Review It
Go over everything you’ve accomplished at the end of the week to boost yourself, and then see what are your upcoming tasks for the next week. This exercise keeps you focused by providing you with hard facts about where you’ve been and where you’re going next. Always write down everything that you have been doing and anything you want to do. Use a planner, a calendar, excel, word, or whatever you want to use to write down everything, and go over it once or twice a week – but just do it. I usually go over everything every morning while I sip on my cup of coffee or tea, it helps me to concentrate and see the bigger picture more clearly, keeping me from blanking out that day and ending up not doing anything.

Let it out
One of the things that has always helped me with my goals is talking about them. I’ll talk about where I am, problems I need to fix, new goals I have added to my list, or how much work I have left to accomplish any of them. By speaking about your goals to trusted friends and even family members, you create support for your ideas, and hey who knows, they may even help you see something you haven’t. It’s always good to let it out, don’t keep it in as if it was a secret – silence is not the way, you need to talk about it.

A New Perspective
Sometimes it’s helpful to walk away from a certain project or goal your working towards for a couple of days to let it brew in your mind. You may find out that once you come back to it, you may have a new perspective angle towards it that you may not have had before. This is where your mind subconsciously works out problems it couldn’t before, due to the fact that you never gave yourself the time to soak it in. It’s the same way as if you planted a seed, if you continuously stare at it for several days it may not seem as it’s growing, but if you walk away for a couple of days and come back to it, you’ll notice new things about it. This will fuel you, gaining a new found focus in achieving your goals.

Keep At It
One of the most important things to keep in mind, is that when you are closest to quitting is when you are in fact closest to achieving your goals. If you feel like you desperately need to quite on your goals, don’t. This comes from an old Chinese proverb and it has proven its wisdom over and over. I’ve been in many situations where I can’t seem to continue on, but that’s only a mental barrier, a conditioned thing you have inside you that is trying to sabotage you from achieving your goals. We are all prone to this pressure and most circum to it. Don’t follow the masses, you are different, if you continue, you will probably succeed. Just keep at it, and you will soon enjoy the real fruits of your labor.

Live It
Most people keep work and life on separate sides of the spectrum, when in fact you need to merge them together in a harmonious balance. Working isn’t negative, and always try to keep this mind set. It’s one of the things that gives us value. By making your work part of your daily life, your goals will be achieved at an overall smoother and better rate and you will maintain a healthy focus. Though you must always remember to keep a balance, don’t be engulfed by either or, you won’t be useful to anyone if you burn out.

No Burn Outs
Don’t ever let yourself burn out, and if you do, take a vacation or something. I’m very ambitious towards all my goals, but I also respect “time out” sessions once in a while. If you get sick just by looking at something you’re suppose to be working on, then just leave it for a while and work on something else or try to relax. If you make time to relax then you’ll refresh yourself. Each one of us has our certain cap of tolerance towards any given thing before we need to recharge again. Understand and respect your tolerance cap. Keep it balanced and even if you “have to” do something – blow it off. By giving yourself time to recharge and relax, you’re in turn refilling your focus meter so that you can continue without hindering your productivity.

IS LINKEDIN USEFUL?

It seems like everyone I know, including myself, has a Linkedin Account.  But I have never actually used it for anything more than establishing an online presence for myself professionally.  All of my friends are on it.  But no one really seems to be on it. For those of you who may not happen to know what Linkedin is please allow me to explain.

Linkedin is a popular social networking software used primarily for creating business contacts, or posting online resumes, for users to broaden their professional interests on the web.

Linkedin utilizes social networking software and basically works on the concept of multi-tiered contacts, which are referred to as ‘Connections’. Registered users maintain a list of business contacts. If you are registered on Linkedin, each contact on the list of people you are connected with can be interacted with (based on certain rules) and who then become your extended contacts, thus maintaining a chain of professional connections.

The contacts originating from a primary user’s connection is known as second-degree connection and the degree level keeps increasing with the addition of connections to each particular connection. This complete list (along with the sub-lists) can be used by professionals to find jobs or by employers to search appropriate and suitable candidates using the primary user’s connections and listing the job profile.

Linkedin works on a “gated-access approach” that ensures proper identity acknowledgement and recognition. This means a user has to have a relevant first-degree, second-degree or nth-degree connection with the primary registered user so as to avoid undesired wandering into somebody’s profile. It also encompasses aspects of European Union privacy laws and the European Union “safe harbor privacy” framework.

Well, word has it that Linkedin has 100 million users now.  Which isn’t surprising given these harsh economic times.  In my opinion, Linkedin is used for three specific reasons:   First, to help people to find a job.  The second reason to help people reconnect professionally – whether it’s with classmates (ie MBA, JD, etc.), old colleagues, etc.    Third, for bragging rights professionally.

The first reason, to help find work, is the most important reason for this sites existence.  And this is the reason I wonder if the site actually works. Guy Kawasaki posted a month ago about a LinkedIn makeover he went through with the staff at LinkedIn. But that also makes me wonder, Does the amount of time you put into creating your profile = a better return? I assume more content will equal better results in terms of searches, but does it actually mean a better return in dollar, euro, peso, pound or any other currency. I haven’t seen it yet, and have not heard anything from anyone who has had such luck.

So how do you used LinkedIn?

BACK THEN THEY DIDN’T WANT ME…

Back then they didn’t want me.  Now I’m hot they all on me.

Who?  Mike Jones.  WHO??? MIKE JONES!!

Disclaimer:  My apologies, I have the tendency to get lost in my own world.  Was having an XU flashback there.

Lately, I keep hearing a lot of my single friends continuously use the phrase (Mike Jones lyric) mentioned in the latter.  Many of them saying that because they have, in this case, juris doctrine degrees and good jobs that girls are now constantly throwing themselves at them.  More than likely this is true.  So what can you do about it?  Pretty much nothing.  Just carry on and have fun with it if that is what you want.

But the other day I was having a conversation with one of my good guy friends regarding this particular topic.  My argument was that this can work both ways – guys do the same thing to girls.  He disagreed.  I threw out various examples.  For instance, what if she was fat in high school.  Went away for college, lost the weight, changed physically.  Comes back to her college reunion and is now the ish.  Now all of a sudden the guys that wanted nothing to do with her are all falling over each other trying to get in good.

Although I hate this theory it’s true.  People date and even marry certain people for what they have, what they assume they have (will have), and who they are (or who their families are).  It sucks.  Trust me.  It’s scary out there, but it’s even scarier if you don’t find the right person, that one person to be with.

My grandparents are my heart.  They retired the same year that I was born (1982) and had vowed never to be the type of grandparent that took care of their grandchildren because they wanted to enjoy their retirement.  Two weeks after I was born I was in Jackson, Mississippi.  As a child that grew up with two professional, ambitious parents, my Mama and Papa had a huge role in my life.  I spent every summer there until I was 12.  In fact, they consider me to be their 4th child.  As the oldest of all five of their grandchildren of 8 years, I cherish the bond that I have with both of them.  This year, my grandfather’s health has not been the best.  He spent a lot of time in the hospital in February and last Saturday was readmitted due to congestive heart failure.  Although he’s doing better, I still worry.  I know that the time will for him to go will be here soon.  It’s something that I have to face, and something I am training myself to face.  Only it’s extremely difficult to accept.  But at some point this past Saturday, while driving to New Orleans, I realized that I want what my grandparent have – one day.  My grandmother has yet to leave his side.  She fusses, worries, and takes care of him.  She gets on his nerves.  Always has but he deals with it.  But she loves him.  They love each other.  They take care of each other.  This little old 80-something couple.  I’ve seen that love for 28 years now, but for some reason my eyes are just now opening up to what they truly have.  I want what they have and I am willing to wait for however long it may take.

So I am saying all of that to say this – yes, back then they may have not wanted you.  But now that you have the job, the car, the house, the letters behind your name – they all may want you.  But why in the hell would you want someone like that?  Open your eyes and your heart.  Be careful who you choose to be with, who you choose to open your life up to.  And always remember…

IT’S OFFICIAL, I AM NOT SUPERWOMAN…YES, I JUST FIGURED THIS OUT…

Have you ever heard of Superwoman Syndrome?  Yea me neither but I “Googled it” and it seems to actually have a definition and everything.

Lets see, there’s a medical definition: “A condition that may affect any ♀ with ≥ 2 X chromosomes, which tends to be more pronounced with more X chromosomes Clinical ♀ with 3 X chromosomes may be asymptomatic or have mental retardation, menstrual dysfunction, microcephaly, dental defects, strabismus, and hypertelorism; with 4 X, mental retardation is the norm, which may be accompanied by midfacial hypoplasia, micrognathia, radial synostosis, 5th finger clinodactyly, narrow shoulders, web neck; with 5 X, defects include growth retardation, FTT, mongoloid slant, saddle nose, PDA, colobomas, limb defects” (www.medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com).

Then there’s this definition: “…she cooks, cleans, pays the bills, takes care of the kids/husband and/or herself, oversees the home, plans fabulous trips, rolls with an amazing crew and is moving up the corporate ladder or making her own way as an entrepreneur. But, her love life may be suffering as a result of her independence and strength.  Her husband says she’s a workaholic, selfish and neglecting him. Her boyfriend says he isn’t a priority and he is tired of coming in second to her ambition and goals” (www.girlsjustwannahavefunds.com).

First of all, neither of these definitions apply to me.  The medical one just sounds…creapy.  But honestly, as a woman in 2011, as an entrepreneur, some days I feel as if I have to always have it together.  I call it a blessing to not be in a relationship or have a husband and kids at the present moment for fear that someone will be neglected which will eventually lead to everything just crashing and burning.  I will admit, it’s hard for me to delegate and even more difficult for me to let go or even be open to someone/let down my walls (different conversation/topic for a different time lol).  My businesses are my babies.  I have developed them, watched them grow, endured all positive and negatives.  In my eyes they are still young so to turn it over, or delegate duties that I think I can do is still strange to me.

But these past few weeks of getting up at 3:30am and not seeing my bed until 11:00 pm or so at least 5-6 days a week have officially taken their toll.  I have realized when I am not at my peak, everything around me suffers.  I am not as “ON” as I want to be.  Between the responsibilities of the store(s), the real estate company, family, and friends…oh and Kingston (the ULTIMATE dog)…I am not the “Kelli” that I should be. Something suffers and it is usually my health.  I knew something was wrong when I left the store yesterday, and tears started flowing.  I then knew that it is time for an “Easy Button”.  I was built to work but now know that I can’t do everything – and should not be.

2011 has been hard physically more than mentally.  The store is doing well – it’s growing – but trust me, running and owning a Quiznos is more than just making subs.  I fell behind at one point on paper work and had to go into extreme hiding in order to catch up.  The past two weeks we have had continuous issues with employees that has led to me having to come in at 5:30 bounce, come back, go do other work, then work the evening shift.  But yet again, that is a whole other topic.

My Mom once told me that “Women do, men delegate”.  Maybe it’s time to flip the switch or just take things to a different level BUT yet again, I’m still trying to figure out how to do that.

BRANDING 2011-A: YOU ARE YOUR COMPANY

While attending the illustrious Xavier University of Louisiana I had the pleasure of being friends with a tons of people who were members of the pan-hellenic council.  Ok, let me stop being so formal – they were Greeks.  I learned many a thing from each and every one of them but the thing I learned most was how they were to behave while wearing the letters of their Greek organization.  For instance, one was not supposed to drink while wearing paraphernalia.  Yea, not supposed to.  They were also to conduct themselves in ways that dignified their membership in said organization.

This teaching also correlates into how you carry yourself each and every day.  I have a company, “Caulfield Holdings, Inc” and we have a logo.  I spent a lot of time and effort in 2010 branding myself and my image.  I am still not where I want to be but I am slowly getting there.  Heck, Rome was not built in a day, correct?  Anyways, the other week I woke up in a funk.  It was dark outside, the beginning of the “Ice/Snow” storms that would shut down Birmingham, Alabama as a whole for a few days.  So the weather and my mood were pretty much on the same page.  Well, my mood showed in my driving which correlated into road rage.  Yep.  Lets just say my actions were not all that pretty until I looked down at the logo on my chest – my logo – and knew it was not befitting of me to behave in such a manner.

Every morning I wake up and think about what I could do to help my image.  I wish I could wear sweats each and every day.  Luckily I can wear jeans but no matter what I need to look my best.  Additionally, how I act, carry myself, treat others – they all play a strong role and have a huge impact on my businesses.  I am the face of Quiznos Sub in Hoover.  I am the face of the Ernest Lee Caulfield Foundation.  I am the face of Caulfield Properties.  If I mess up, if I step out of line – boom – everything could be gone in an instance.

Remember, you are your company.
